Safety Tips
Ten common sense safety tips to follow when using a live Christmas tree in a home are:
- Select a fresh tree by picking one with needles that do not pull easily from the branches. Keep your live tree outdoors, protected from the wind and sun until you are ready to bring the tree into your home.
- Provide a stable tree stand that holds the tree securely, and is large enough to prevent tipping.
- When you bring the tree into your home, cut one centimeter or more off the base of the trunk. This opens the tree stem so it can take up water. Note: Assign a tree guardian to look after the well being of the Christmas tree. This person, could be a young person in the home who adopts the tree. The guardian should check the tree often to ensure that it never runs low on water (see tree guardian's checklist). This responsibility could be a fun contribution to the holiday celebration
- Do not block or obscure any part of an exit or hallway.
- Avoid heat sources and keep exposure to direct sunlight to a minimum.
- Stabilize your tree by tying it to the floor, a wall, or ceiling support.
- Ensure a two day water supply capability (min. 8 litre container). A fresh cultivated Christmas tree can "drink" 2-3 litres of water a day.
- Check your tree daily, first thing in the morning, for dryness. (Grasp a branch and pull with firm pressure towards you allowing the branch to slip through your hand.) If the needles fall off readily, the tree is too dry and should be removed as soon as possible.
- When Using electric Lighting on Christmas trees, use only low energy lights (miniature lights) that are CSA approved and in good repair. NOTE: If you have decided to use lights, ensure that the lights are turned off, when the area is vacant and unplug before retiring in the night
- Locate a fire extinguisher near your tree for additional safety.
Tree Guardian's Checklist
- Tree is fresh at time of setup
- Not blocking exits
- Not obscuring emergency equipment
- Away from heat drafts
- Tree secured to prevent tipping
- Watering schedule set up
If desired, the home benefits of real Christmas trees could be extended long into the winter. By placing the used tree near a birdfeeder it can provide perching locations for visiting birds. |
